Adult Learn to Sail

This eight-week class is designed for adult students (at least eighteen years old) who want to learn the basics of sailing. Students are taught the parts of a sailboat, the points of sail, and basic knot tying, among other skills. Students are first introduced to sailing through on-land lectures and demonstrations, then go out in a 14-foot Club 420 sailboat to practice the basic skills.  In later classes in the session, the students may have an opportunity to sail on a larger keelboat, but cannot be guaranteed.  A copy of The Annapolis Book of Seamanship will be provided (a $55 value) and at home readings will be assigned each week.

The SJJF program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students will always wear life jackets. Instructors, either in the student’s boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students. All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program and trained through US Sailing.

Prerequisite(s): 18 years old minimum, comfortable with swimming in open water without assistance (minimum 25 yards, tread water for one minute minimum)
