Youth Beginning / Advanced Beginning: An introductory class for the first time sailor. Children typically start in an Opti Dinghy (or similar OPPI or Cube). The older, larger children start in the Club 420s. Basic sailing classes will be taught in the classroom and on the water, including: theory, points of sail, and using the sail, lines and tiller to steer and catch the wind.  Land based drills in the boats builds confidence before introduction to water based training.

Session2

Our beginners having a great time out on the water.

Youth Intermediate: For our graduates of the Beginning class, students move quickly through a review of basic sailing and on to trimming and shaping the sails to match wind strength and point of sail.  Intermediate sailors fully set up boats for sailing and retrieving.  Introduction to racing, follow the leaders, sponge tag and other games on the water help to hone their skills.

Youth Advanced: Opti sailors use hiking straps and eight to balance and trim the boat for maximum speed and sailing enjoyment.  Competitive sailing and right of way rules, preparation for 420 racing, and racing instruction are provided.  For 420 sailors, it’s time to let fly the spinnakers, and hang out over the water using hiking straps.

Team SJJF Racing. For our accomplished Opti and 420 sailors, this program provides an opportunity to race and sail with over 100 students from the West Michigan Youth Sailing Association.  SJJF is becoming one of the largest traveling teams.  We’ll travel to regattas at venues like White Lake, Spring Lake, Grand Rapids, Gull Lake, Holland, and Muskegon.

The program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students will always wear life jackets. Instructors, either in the student’s boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students. All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program and trained through US Sailing.
