Level: Beginner – Intermediate – ages 12-80
Adult/Youth Intro to Keelboat
In this one-week session, beginning students are introduced to sailing a keelboat, a J-24 sailboat. Students are introduced to trimming sails with a winch, tracking a course with a compass, flying a spinnaker, and skippering/steering with the tiller.
Due to the size of the boat, this class is limited to a maximum of four students, offering a great opportunity to learn under close instructor supervision. Class is open to youth and adults, with week 8 dedicated to Adult Intro to Keelboat.
The SJJF program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students are required to wear a life jacket (provided) at all times while on the docks and on the water. Instructors accompany the students in the boat. All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program and trained through US Sailing.
Prerequisite(s): Open to sailors 12-80 years old with basic sailing knowledge and comfortable with swimming 25 yards and treading water with a life jacket on. Pass a swim test.
Youth Intro to Keelboat sailing is offered as a four-day, one-week program three times during the season. Please note that there are no make up dates.
