Advanced Beginner / Intermediate Sailing

Level: Advanced Beginner / Intermediate – ages 9-18

Advanced Beginner / Intermediate—Learn to Sail

This class is designed for youth sailors who want to advance their sailing skills and learn to sail new boats.

Students are taught proper sail trim on all points of sail, advanced boat handling and weight placement, refined tacking and gybing techniques, and basic right-of-way rules.

Sailors in the advanced beginner/intermediate class may sail an Opti (one-person performance boat), an RS Quest (2–4-person boat), a 420 (two-person performance boat), a Laser (one-person performance boat). Students are encouraged to try different boats, with boat assignments determined at instructor discretion.

Students are welcome to take this class multiple times to continue their skill progression.

Upon successful completion of Intermediate Learn to Sail, students interested in racing are encouraged to enroll in the Learn to Race class to learn the basics of sailboat racing and join Team SJJF Racing to further advance their skills. Students may also choose to enroll in the Adventure Sailing class.

The SJJF program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students are required to wear a life jacket (provided) at all times while on the docks and on the water. Instructors, either in the student’s boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students. All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program and trained through US Sailing.

Prerequisite(s): 9-18 years old. Successful completion of Learn to Sail Opti or 420/RS Quest, or equivalent experience, to ensure your sailor’s skill level is at an appropriate level for this class. Ability to swim the length of the pool and tread water with a life jacket on.
