Level: Advanced Beginner / Intermediate – ages 8-18
Learn to Race
Learn to Race–a one-week class offered in both the performance Opti and 420 sailboats–is designed for advanced beginner and intermediate sailors with an interest in racing. Students are taught basic racing rules, how to sail around a race course, starting and mark-rounding techniques, among other skills.
Instruction blends on-land briefings and demonstrations with on-the-water training and practice. This class serves as a prerequisite to joining Team SJJF Race class.
Boat assignments are at the discretion of the instructor and Director.
The SJJF program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students are required to wear a life jacket (provided) at all times while on the docks and on the water. Instructors, either in the student’s boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students. All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program and trained through US Sailing.
Prerequisite(s): 8-18 years old. Ability to swim the length of the pool and tread water with a life jacket on.
Permission of the Director is Required. Contact schooldirector@sjjf.org.
