Level: Beginner – ages 12-18, over 125 pounds
420/RS Quest—Learn to Sail
In this class, youth sailors learn the basic skills to sail a small boat. Students are taught the parts of a sailboat, the points of sail, capsize recovery, and basic knot tying. This class is meant for those new to sailing as well as those furthering their beginning sailing skills.
Students are divided based on skill level, with instruction tailored to that level, to ensure that students stay engaged and continue their skill development. Instruction blends on-land briefings and demonstrations with on-water training and practice.
Students will learn to sail aboard an RS Quest or a Club 420 in a multi-crew setting, where they may be paired with a more experienced sailor or an instructor.
The SJJF program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students are required to wear a life jacket (provided) at all times while on the docks and on the water. Instructors, either in the student’s boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students. All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program and trained through US Sailing.
Prerequisite(s): 12-18 years old, over 125 pounds. Ability to swim the length of the pool and tread water with a life jacket on.
