Level: Beginner – ages 8-14, under 125 pounds
Opti—Learn to Sail
In this class, beginning youth sailors learn the basic skills to sail a small boat independently. Students are taught the parts of a sailboat, the points of sail, capsize recovery, and basic knot tying. This class is meant for those new to sailing as well as those furthering their beginning sailing skills.
Students are divided by skill level, and instruction is tailored accordingly to ensure continued engagement and skill development.
Students sail a one-person boat—the SailQube (a simpler, more durable version of an Opti)—which provides the quickest learning curve. Most students remain in this class for multiple sessions based upon progression recommended by the instructors, acquiring the skills required to progress to Advanced Beginner/Intermediate.
All beginners under the age of fourteen and under 125 pounds will begin in this class.
The SJJF program is based on the US Sailing training system. Students are required to wear a life jacket (provided) at all times while on the docks and on the water. Instructors, either in the student’s boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students. All instructors are experienced sailors, many having learned to sail in the SJJF Summer Sailing Program and trained through US Sailing.
Prerequisite(s): 8–14 years old, under 125 pounds. Ability to swim the length of the pool and tread water with a life jacket on.
