Monday Night Racing / Open Sailing

Monday Night Racing / Open Sailing

Monday Night Fun Race—This is a low-key, fun-focused fleet open to the public with prior sailing experience and parents who want to sail with their kids.

Boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are required to rig and de-rig without assistance from SJJF personnel. All sailors should check in with the supervisor/race officer upon arrival.

Courses are announced before each race, typically a windward/leeward course of one or two laps depending on conditions, with 15–20 minute races and a goal of three to four races per night. Starts use a three-minute sequence with Lasers first, then 420s. Scoring uses a low-point system, with results posted weekly on SJJF.org, one throw-out for every five races sailed, and non-starters scored as the number of boats plus one.

Sailing availability and appropriate weather conditions are at the discretion of SJJF personnel on site and may also be communicated through text message and/or email.

Open Sailing—In addition to racing, Open Sailing will be available Monday evenings. Open Sailing provides supervised, independent sailing time for experienced youth and adult sailors who wish to practice their skills, sail recreationally, or enjoy informal sailing with friends. Participants choose from available SJJF boats and sail under light supervision. A chase boat will be on the water for safety and support.

This program encourages continued sailing and boat access beyond class hours, allowing sailors to build confidence and experience across different wind and weather conditions. Sailing availability and appropriate weather conditions are at the discretion of SJJF personnel on site and may also be communicated through text message and/or email. All sailors must carry a charged cell phone or VHF radio while on the water. Boats are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are required to rig and de-rig without assistance from SJJF personnel. All sailors should check in with the supervisor/race officer upon arrival.

Open Sailing is free for sailors currently registered in SJJF programs; however, all participants must sign in upon arrival.
