CLASS DESCRIPTION:

Learn to Sail–Paw Paw Lake

In this class, youth sailors learn the basic skills to sail a small boat independently. Students are taught the parts of a sailboat, points of sail, capsize recovery, and basic knot tying. This class is meant for both those who are new to sailing and those who want to further their sailing skills as advanced beginners.  Students sail a one-person boat, the Optimist Pram (Opti), or a two-person boat, the Club 420, depending on the student’s age, weight, and skill level. Sailors are encouraged to take multiple sessions of this class, either both weeks at Paw Paw Lake or continuing on with classes at our St. Joseph SJJF location.

  • Prerequisite(s): 8 years old minimum, swim one length of pool

The program is based on the US Sailing training system.  Students always wear life jackets.  Instructors, either in the student’s boat or on a safety boat, accompany the students.  Students must be able to demonstrate the ability to swim.  Instructors are experienced sailors and US Sailing trained.  All skill levels are welcome to enroll: beginner, advanced beginner, intermediate, or advanced.
